The last decade has seen many changes in mainstream media, but possibly the most surprising has been the massive rise in popularity of superheroes – thanks in no small part to the MCU, the DCEU, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. What’s interesting though, is that superheroes have always been popular in animation. From Western cartoons like X-Men, Justice League Unlimited, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, to anime titles like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Casshern, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia.

So how do superheroes fit into the modern animated landscape, and what actually counts as a superhero when it comes to anime? Andrew and Rob don their toughened spandex (no capes!), and head for the mean streets of animation to find out.

After that it’s back to business as usual with a look at some of the things we’ve been watching, which this week are Dragon Ball Super part 6 and the anime adaptation of Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors spin-off – Samurai Warriors.
