In 1975 the world was introduced to a weird and wacky musical film called The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but before that was the underground punk rock musical loved by misfits and those who felt misplaced in society. Now it’s a cultural phenomenon that fills out cinemas and theatres across the globe with all kinds of people who want to not just dream it, but be it.
Directed and produced by Andreas Zerr, Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror had it’s English premiere at this year’s FrightFest. The documentary is a perfect celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the musical film as it explores why The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been so successful, as well as discussing how it affected us culturally, and why the fandom so lovingly adores it. With interviews from actors, producers and filmmakers who had a hand in either creating the stage production in it’s early years or took over the task of turning it from a play to a film, you really get to understand why this story is so important to those who love it. As a fan of the film myself, I was looking forward to finding out more about the early days of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – especially as I knew a little bit (but not much), about the story’s humble beginnings in a small theatre where it shocked audiences with it’s frightening and sexy themes. As the documentary moves into the topic of the making of the film and the cultural events after it I was in familiar territory, but it was still fun to hear from people who loved the film just as much (if not more), than me.
With all that though I do think that if you’re a big fan of the show you may not necessarily learn anything new, but don’t let that put you off! This documentary was created by fans, for fans, and you can feel it throughout as everyone seems to have such positive and happy memories of creating both the play and film. You can’t help but stick on your fishnets as soon as the documentary ends, and try and catch it either on film or on stage again.
